The Nigeria Customs Service has opened a review process for applicants who were shortlisted in its recruitment exercise but were later screened out and stopped from proceeding to the Customs Training College.
Affected applicants who believe their disqualification was wrong can now submit a complaint to the Nigeria Customs Service for a case by case review.
The review followed complaints from candidates who had appeared on the recruitment shortlist but were later excluded during the physical screening, documentation and verification stages.
Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi directed that genuine complaints should be reconsidered after meeting some of the affected applicants.
This article explains who can submit a complaint, the issues Customs identified during screening, how to write the appeal, what information to include and what happens after submitting it.
Who Can Submit a Customs Recruitment Appeal?
The review is for candidates who:
- Participated in the Nigeria Customs recruitment exercise.
- Appeared on the recruitment shortlist.
- Attended the required screening or documentation exercise.
- Were later disqualified or stopped from proceeding to the training college.
- Believe the screening decision should be reviewed.
This is not a new Customs recruitment application.
People who did not apply for the recruitment exercise or were never shortlisted cannot use the complaint process to enter the recruitment exercise.
The NCS said the review was introduced specifically for aggrieved applicants who were screened out after appearing on the shortlist.
How to Submit Your Complaint
Affected applicants should send their complaint to the official Nigeria Customs Service recruitment helpdesk:
The NCS instructed candidates to provide accurate information so that their individual cases can be properly examined.
Do not send a message that simply says:
I was disqualified. Please help me.
Your complaint should identify you clearly and explain the exact decision you are challenging.
Information to Include in the Email
A useful complaint should contain:
Full name
Use the same name used for your Customs recruitment application.
Application or recruitment details
Include your application number, recruitment number or other reference available from your application.
NIN
Use the same NIN attached to the recruitment application.
Cadre and position
State whether you applied under the Superintendent, Inspectorate or Customs Assistant cadre and give the position where applicable.
State of origin
Include the state used during your application.
Screening details
State when and where you attended the screening.
Reason for the complaint
Explain what happened and why you believe the decision requires another review.
Phone number and email
Use contact details you currently have access to.
Sample Nigeria Customs Recruitment Appeal Email
Subject: Request for Review of Nigeria Customs Recruitment Screening Decision
Dear Nigeria Customs Service Recruitment Team,
My name is [Full Name]. I participated in the recent Nigeria Customs Service recruitment exercise under the [Cadre/Position].
I was shortlisted and attended the screening exercise, but I was subsequently informed that I could not proceed to the training stage.
I am writing to request a review of my screening outcome.
My details are as follows:
Full Name: [Name]
NIN: [NIN]
Application/Recruitment Number: [Number]
Cadre: [Cadre]
Position: [Position]
State of Origin: [State]
Phone Number: [Number]
Email Address: [Email]
Reason for requesting the review:
[Briefly and clearly explain what happened and why you believe the screening decision should be reconsidered.]
I have attached the relevant documents supporting my complaint.
Thank you for reviewing my case.
Yours faithfully,
[Full Name]
What Documents Should You Attach?
The NCS statement did not publish a compulsory list of documents specifically for the complaint email.
However, applicants should attach documents directly connected to the issue they are challenging.
For example, if the complaint concerns educational qualifications, attach the relevant certificate.
If it concerns age, use the same genuine age document presented during recruitment.
The official physical screening required shortlisted candidates to present documents including:
- National Identification Number
- Birth certificate or declaration of age
- Educational certificates
- Certificate of state of origin
- Passport photographs
- Completed guarantor’s form
- NYSC certificate where applicable
Do not alter a document or submit information different from what was used during the original recruitment exercise.
Why Were Some Applicants Disqualified?
According to the Nigeria Customs Service, issues were identified among 397 applicants during screening.
The issues included:
- Substance use
- Physical fitness
- Medical records
- Age
- Submitted documents
The NCS specifically stated that cigarettes and alcohol were excluded from the substance abuse category referenced in its statement.
It also said some candidates were rejected after irregularities were identified in their selection process.
Being on the Final List Did Not Mean Automatic Enlistment
This is an important part of the current review.
The NCS said appearing on the final shortlist did not automatically qualify a candidate for enlistment.
Applicants still had to pass the remaining recruitment requirements.
Those checks included:
- Credential verification
- Document verification
- Physical fitness assessment
- Endurance assessment
- Medical examination
- Age verification
- Drug screening
The published shortlist therefore represented a stage in the recruitment process, not an unconditional appointment.
What Happens After You Submit the Complaint?
Submitting the email does not automatically restore a candidate to the training list.
The NCS said cases will be examined individually.
Candidates whose complaints proceed through the review process will be required to undergo fresh screening.
The fresh screening means the applicant must still satisfy the same recruitment standards.
There is no exemption simply because a complaint was accepted for review.
Can a Rejected Candidate Still Enter the Training College?
Yes, but only after the review process and successful screening.
The purpose of the appeal process is to give candidates with genuine complaints another opportunity to have their cases examined.
It is not an automatic reinstatement exercise.
A candidate whose case is reconsidered still has to satisfy the applicable recruitment requirements before proceeding to training.
Certificate Fraud Can Lead to Prosecution
Candidates should submit only genuine information and documents.
The NCS warned that investigations establishing criminal conduct, including certificate fraud and other offences, can result in referral for legal action and prosecution.
Do not submit altered certificates, false age declarations or another person’s information in an attempt to overturn a screening decision.
Is There a Deadline for the Appeal?
The NCS statement announcing the review did not publish a closing date for submitting complaints.
Affected candidates should therefore send their complaints through the designated email without unnecessary delay.
The absence of a published deadline should not be interpreted as an unlimited review period.
Is There an Appeal Portal?
No separate public appeal portal was announced.
The channel provided by the Nigeria Customs Service is:
The official recruitment portal remains available for recruitment related information and identity verification:
https://updates.customs.gov.ng/trn/
Applicants should not pay anyone to submit an appeal or promise reinstatement.
What Affected Applicants Should Do Now
If you were shortlisted but later stopped from entering the training college:
- Gather your recruitment details.
- Identify the exact issue you want reviewed.
- Prepare a short factual explanation.
- Attach documents directly related to your complaint.
- Send the complaint to helpdesk@customs.gov.ng.
- Keep a copy of the email and attachments.
- Keep the phone number and email used for your recruitment active.
- Be prepared to undergo fresh screening.
Do not submit multiple contradictory complaints.
A clear complaint containing your correct recruitment details gives the Service the information needed to identify and examine your case.
The Nigeria Customs recruitment review gives screened out applicants an opportunity to challenge a decision they believe was incorrect.
It does not cancel the recruitment requirements.
Candidates whose complaints are accepted still have to meet the physical, medical, age, documentation and other screening standards required by the Nigeria Customs Service before they can proceed to training.
