Students in 200 level have access to some scholarship opportunities that are specifically designed for second-year undergraduates.
By this stage, most students already have a first-year result and CGPA, which scholarship providers can use to assess academic performance.
Two major examples in 2026 were the NNPCL/Chevron National University Scholarship and the Alex Otti Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship.
Both 2026 application rounds have closed, but their requirements are useful for students preparing for the next application cycle.
NNPCL/Chevron National University Scholarship 2026
The NNPC Limited/Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture National University Scholarship supports Nigerian undergraduate students studying approved courses in accredited Nigerian universities.
The 2026 award specifically targeted full-time students in 200 level.

The signed copy then had to be uploaded back to Scholastica.
Students preparing for another round should therefore not leave this step until the last day.
Does the NNPCL/Chevron Scholarship Require a Test?
Yes.
The 2026 scholarship required applicants to participate in a Computer-Based Test, CBT.
Selection was based on a combination of:
- Academic performance
- CBT performance
Only shortlisted applicants were contacted for the next stage.
Students preparing for a future round should be ready for academic and aptitude-style questions.
Can You Apply More Than Once?
No.
Multiple applications could lead to automatic disqualification.
Applicants should complete one accurate application rather than opening several accounts.
Can You Apply if You Already Have Another Oil Company Scholarship?
The 2026 rules stated that current beneficiaries of another international oil and gas company scholarship should not apply.
Applicants were also not allowed to apply simultaneously for other scholarship schemes sponsored by Chevron, its joint venture partners or affiliates, including the Agbami scholarship.
Is There an Application Fee?
No.
The NNPCL/Chevron scholarship application and selection process is free.
Chevron states that applicants should not pay anyone to submit an application or guarantee selection.
The company also says it does not appoint agents to process scholarship applications.
Can You Apply by Email?
No.
Applications had to be submitted through the official Scholastica portal.
Email applications and hard-copy submissions were not accepted.
NNPCL/Chevron Scholarship Deadline 2026
The deadline for the 2026 application was:

The application has now closed.
Students entering 200 level should monitor the official Scholastica scholarship platform and Chevron announcements for another round.
Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship 2026
The Alex Otti Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship is another opportunity that specifically targeted students moving into 200 level.
The scholarship focuses on academically strong students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who are connected to Abia State.
The Foundation says its scholarship programme supports students attending publicly owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Who Could Apply?
For the 2025/2026 scholarship cycle, applicants had to:
- Have completed their second-semester 100-level examinations and be progressing to 200 level
- Have at least a 3.5 CGPA on a 5.0 scale or equivalent
- Attend a government-owned tertiary institution
- Be ancestrally from Abia State or currently reside in Abia State

Can Students Outside Abia State Apply?
Yes, but there must be a connection to Abia State.
The 2026 scholarship targeted students who were either:
- Ancestrally from Abia State, or
- Currently residing in Abia State
Applicants relying on residence had to provide acceptable proof of residence.
Can Private University Students Apply?
The Foundation states that its scholarship supports students in publicly owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Students in private universities should therefore not assume that they qualify.
Can Polytechnic Students Apply?
The Foundation’s current description refers broadly to publicly owned tertiary institutions rather than only universities.
Applicants should check the current application notice to confirm whether their institution type and grading system are accepted.
The academic requirement is stated as 3.5 on a 5.0 scale or its equivalent.
Can Part-Time Students Apply?
No.
The 2026 scholarship was not open to:
- Part-time students
- Sandwich students
- Students in similar non-regular programmes
Applicants had to be enrolled in a regular academic programme.
Documents Required for the Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship
Applicants needed to prepare:
First-Year Statement of Result
Students had to submit a signed statement of result covering their first academic session.
The result had to be issued or signed by the Department or Faculty Administrative Officer representing the Registrar.
Direct Entry students had to provide their qualifying examination result instead.
Proof of Residence
Applicants relying on Abia State residence could provide either:
- A recognition letter from a community or religious leader, or
- A utility bill covering the three months before the interview
This document was used to confirm residence in Abia State.
Valid Identification
Applicants also needed a recognized means of identification.
The 1,200-Word Scholarship Essay
The Alex Otti Foundation required applicants to submit a 1,200-word essay.
The essay was divided into three sections of approximately 400 words each.
Applicants were asked to discuss:
- What they consider the greatest innovation of the 21st century.
- How that innovation has affected them personally.
- How countries such as Nigeria can use that innovation for development.
Students should answer these questions directly rather than writing one long general essay.
Can You Use AI to Write the Alex Otti Scholarship Essay?
The Foundation specifically warns applicants against plagiarism and excessive use of Artificial Intelligence.
It says excessive AI-generated content can lead to disqualification because the Foundation wants to hear the applicant’s own ideas and voice.
Students should therefore write the essay themselves.
AI or grammar tools may help with minor editing, but they should not replace your own thinking.
How to Apply for the Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship
Applications were submitted online through the Foundation’s scholarship portal.
The basic process was:
- Visit the official Alex Otti Foundation scholarship portal. : https://alexottifoundation.org/portal/

- Upload proof of residence where required.

Incomplete applications were not processed.
Does the Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship Require a Test?
Previous beneficiaries have gone through a competitive process involving application screening, tests and oral interviews.
For example, the Foundation’s 2025 scholarship selection included tests followed by oral interviews before beneficiaries were selected.
Applicants should therefore prepare for more than document submission.
Does the Scholarship Require an Interview?
Applicants who progress through the screening process may be invited for an interview.
You should be prepared to discuss:
- Your academic performance
- Your family and financial situation
- Your education
- Your goals
- Your connection to Abia State
- Your essay
- Your plans after graduation
Do not memorize complicated answers.
Give direct and truthful responses.
How Much Does the Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship Pay?
The Foundation’s 2026 application notice does not state a guaranteed fixed amount for every future scholarship cycle.
However, beneficiaries of the 2025/2026 programme were presented with ₦250,000 each, with reports stating that the support would continue annually until graduation.
Students should still check the current award letter because scholarship values can change between application cycles.
Does the Scholarship Cover More Than Tuition?
The Foundation describes its scholarship programme as financial support intended to help students meet the cost of tertiary education.
Recent scholarship information has described support for expenses including tuition and living costs.
Applicants should rely on their actual award letter for the exact expenses and amount covered.
Who Should Not Apply?
The 2026 rules specifically excluded siblings of current Alex Otti Foundation scholars while the existing sibling was still receiving the scholarship.
However, siblings of former scholars who had completed their scholarship tenure could apply.
The Foundation also encouraged students whose families can comfortably pay for their education to allow financially disadvantaged students to benefit.
NNPCL/Chevron vs Alex Otti Foundation Scholarship
The two scholarships have different requirements.
The NNPCL/Chevron scholarship was available nationwide to eligible 200-level university students studying specified courses.
Applicants needed at least a 3.5 CGPA, six O’Level credits in one sitting and had to complete a CBT.
The Alex Otti Foundation scholarship focused on academically strong students connected to Abia State who were progressing into 200 level at publicly owned tertiary institutions.
It required a minimum 3.5 CGPA, proof of academic performance, proof of Abia residence where applicable, valid identification and a 1,200-word essay.
Documents Every 200-Level Student Should Keep Ready
Even when you are not currently applying for a scholarship, keep these documents organized:
- First-year statement of result
- Academic transcript
- Admission letter
- JAMB result
- O’Level result
- School ID card
- Birth certificate
- Local government identification
- Passport photograph
- NIN
- Valid means of identification
- Proof of residence where required
Scan them clearly and keep digital copies.
Your names should appear consistently across your documents.
If your JAMB result says one name and your university record uses another, resolve the difference before submitting scholarship applications.
What if Your CGPA Is Below 3.5?
A CGPA below 3.5 means you would not have met the standard academic requirement for either of these two general categories in 2026.
However, that does not mean you cannot receive any scholarship.
Look for:
- Need-based scholarships
- State bursaries
- Local government scholarships
- Community scholarships
- Professional association grants
- Religious foundation scholarships
- Scholarships with lower CGPA requirements
Blind and visually impaired applicants under the NNPCL/Chevron special category, for example, needed a minimum 2.5 CGPA rather than 3.5.
Why Your First-Year Result Matters
Many 200-level scholarships use your 100-level result to determine whether you qualify.
A student who finishes first year with a strong CGPA therefore has more scholarship options.
If you are still in 100 level, take your first-year examinations seriously.
Your result may determine whether you can apply for corporate scholarships when you enter 200 level.
Should 200-Level Students Apply for Every Scholarship?
No.
Read the requirements first.
Check:
- Academic level
- CGPA
- Course
- Institution
- Admission year
- State of origin or residence
- Age requirement where applicable
- Whether students with another scholarship can apply
Apply only where you meet the conditions.
Three well-prepared applications to scholarships you qualify for are more useful than submitting ten incomplete applications to programmes where you are not eligible.
How to Avoid Scholarship Disqualification
Before submitting an application:
- Use your correct CGPA
- Upload genuine documents
- Make sure your names match
- Use a clear passport photograph
- Follow the required file format
- Do not submit multiple applications where prohibited
- Do not wait until the deadline
- Check your email regularly after applying
- Never pay an agent to guarantee selection
Scholarship providers can verify documents with universities and other institutions.
False results, altered documents or incorrect information can lead to immediate disqualification.
For students in 200 level, the biggest advantage is timing. You already have a university academic record, but you still have several years before graduation to benefit from a renewable scholarship.
Prepare your documents early, maintain a strong CGPA and monitor genuine scholarship providers throughout the academic year.
